Drilling Into Carpet

Place it on the carpet and melt on through. First if drilling into concrete be sure to use a masonry bit. You won t find the 4375 carpet cutter and drill guide via your normal tool buying channels but a few specialty tool places such as bt e utility products sell the 4375 online for about 32. Put a piece of rubber hose on the sharp end.

I put a piece of masking tape on the carpet with the hole location marked and burn right through the tape. I ve also done it without the tube stub just using the needle nose to spred the carpet but it become a three handed task. Get a drill bit the size of the hole you want. Then drill inside the tubing the surface below.

Heat the bit with a candle or lighter so it cauterizes or melts the carpet fibers as it goes through them. What i do is cut a slit in the carpet then using needle nose pliers spred the opening and push a short piece of copper tubing through the slit. The carpet fibers could unravel and wrap around the drill bit potentially damaging the carpet and stalling the drill.

They re very common in commercial work especially for exterior applications or for areas where you dont want the doors easily taken off of the hinges.
